Hobbystreak Day 9

 I keep falling off the wagon but try to hop right on again. For yesterday, more progress on the Legion of Hell, my undead demonic chaos army.

1. Primed various parts of the Gravemaw from Fleshcraft Studios (printed over the previous days). Perfect chaotic giant or monster. Two skulls, four arms. Will paint with the hellfire motif of other Nighthaunt type models in the Legion of Hell.

2. Beginning to paint the hellfire on my new prints of the Legion of Hell Nightmare Cavalry (Fleshcraft Geistmares). First a 50-50 mix of fire yellow and white primer. Then a layer of a 2-1 mix of fire yellow to fire orange. Then wet blending fire orange onto the raised areas, with some areas getting a layer of a transparent orange. Eventually will wet blend onto the raised areas progressively redder tones.

The Rage of Achilles (Continued)

 OK, so now that I've returned to work in Ukraine post-COVID, I have gotten around to setting up my new resin 3D printer and started printing miniatures. Some of these have been some additions to my largely complete 5th century BC Undead Classical Greek army. Also, while on extended COVID leave, I received my miniatures from Studio Miniatures' "Dead Through Time Kickstarter", which gave me some more Greeks and now Achaemenid Persians! So I've been busy printing, priming, painting, and assembling to put the finishing touches on my hoplite phalanx!

First up, finishing a unit from Studio Miniatures. Zombie hoplites for the phalanx. primed, painted, assembled, based, and sealed.

 

Next up, some skirmishers from Studio Miniatures. Four zombie peltasts, and four zombie toxotai. Primed, painted, assembled, and based.

Straight off my printer - a zombie cyclops from Bryan Nafarante's Beastiary #3 Kickstarter. Printed in resin. Studio Miniatures hoplite for scale.

Lastly, something I've always wanted, skeletal satyr slingers! Designed by me with Heroforge. Printed in resin on my Qiditecj Shadow 5S. Primed, painted with Skeleton Horde contrast paint.

Kickstarter Review - Dragons of the Red Moon

I backed Dragons of the Red Moon back in April. Kickstarted by Draco Studios out of Mexico, they were raising funds to produce six gargantuan 200mm dragons. But in addition to getting physical models, you could opt to pledge for all six dragons in .stl format to print out yourself.

I was only interested in one of the dragons, the skeletal (natch) dragon Nixis. But all the other sculpts are gorgeous as well. They just released the file a couple of weeks ago.

The pose is unique, with the weight of the beast resting on its wing knuckles while its forearms remain free to grasp.

I have an FDM printer, but honestly, I am so bad with it and this print is so complex I may just pay to have it printed in resin anyway.

Recent Haul - Death Tyrant (Undead Beholder)

Continuing the survey of my recent haul we have this "Death Tyrant", which is an undead beholder.


This model is somewhat unique in that it isn't actually cast in metal or resin, but rather is my first example of a 3D printed mini. I ordered it off of the Jax Miniatures on Shapeways.


I'm very excited about 3D printing and think it's definitely that way of the future in table top war gaming. Instead of having to spend hundreds of dollars on figures, you'll pay $20 for a set of .stl files and have them printed out. At the moment, 3D printing is good for larger figures like this. The sculpt is interesting and is fairly detailed. You may notice the surface is a bit rough. That's the nature of the material the model is printed in. It's the "strong and flexible" type of material. Other materials are smoother and pick up more detail such as "Ultra-detail Frosted", but they are consequently more expensive. In the coming years expect prices to drop.


One good thing about 3D printed figures is changing the scale is a snap! This figure is the "medium" size as opposed to "large".

The Death Tyrant is essentially a skeletal beholder - one of the most iconic D&D creatures. Powerful and terrifying, he's going to fit right into my Undead Chaos Horde with my two other examples of undead beholder-kind.
